Following the appointment of the new Cabinet, the Forest Sector now reports to the ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts, while the Wildlife and Parks Sectors report to the ministère de l'Environnement, de la Lutte aux changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs. Adjustments will be made to the website over time.

Sylvain, Jean-Daniel

Jean-Daniel Sylvain holds a bachelor’s degree in applied geomatics (B. Sc., 2008) as well as a master’s degree in geographic sciences (M. Sc., 2010) from the University of Sherbrooke. He also holds a doctorate in water engineering from Laval University (Ph.D., 2023). He joined the Direction de la recherche forestière in the summer of 2011. His research focuses on the characterization of biophysical parameters, the modelling of soils, water and their possible effects on the growth and vulnerability of forest species. More specifically, he is working to develop estimation methods to characterize the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil and climate conditions as well as plant cover for the contemporary and future periods. His multidisciplinary approach allows the combination of airborne and satellite remote sensing data, supervised learning methods and physics-based models, in order to follow and model the biophysical variables and their associated uncertainty, all in a context of operational management. In the past, Jean-Daniel has worked as a research professional on soil and water modelling at the Institut de recherche et développement en agroenvironnement, as well as in the pedologue and agriculture laboratory at Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.
